What are saleable returns?
A saleable return occurs when a pharmacy returns drug product to a wholesaler. If there is evidence that the product has been handled properly, it can be re-sold.
Saleable Returns Stats: 2-3% of all the drugs are returned from the retail Pharmacy to the wholesale distributor, this 2-3% of returns equates to $6 Billions.
What is a FDA Verification process?
Effective 27 November 2019, the U.S. Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) requires wholesalers and distributors to verify the unique identifier of returned products before these can be placed into inventory for resale. The DSCSA defines verification as the process of “determining whether the product identifier affixed to, or imprinted upon on a package, or homogeneous case corresponds to the [unique identifier] assigned to the product by the manufacturer or the repackager.”
How is the Verification process conducted today?
Verification is done through a process called Verification Router Service(VRS). VRS is an interoperable solution used to manage the acceptance, formatting, and delivery of the verification requests and responses.
How does Verification Router Service work?
Upon receiving product as a potentially saleable return, the wholesale distributor (henceforth referred to as Requestors) captures the product identifier information and passes the data to a qualified routing service (henceforth referred to as Verification Router Service or VRS), which references the associated GTIN or GCP to automatically query the appropriate Manufacturer’s (henceforth referred to as Responders) database and return a response in real-time.
